Introduction to Quantum Monte Carlo

The aim of this section is to introduce the Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) technique, its origins and the current state of progress in the field. It concentrates on the aspects of QMC relevant to the work carried out in section gif, specifically the Variational Quantum Monte Carlo technique (VMC) and the choice of trial wavefunction used in VMC. Attention is drawn to the limitations of the technique such as the restrictions on the choice of the variational trial wavefunction due to the cusp condition and the problem of the fixed nodal surface of the wavefunction. Some of these problems also relate to the Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) technique which is also briefly introduced.
