The idea of organising short, focused events that bring together selected scientists to present their view on current research topics but also allowed plenty of time for chaired as well as break up discussions was borne out of the success of the first event (AWGMSI) organised by S.Bramwell, C.Castelnovo, P.Holdsworth, and R.Moessner.
C.Castelnovo and R.Moessner in particular worked to turn the first event into a series of Advanced Working Groups, in its present format. The effort was initially funded by the physics department at Royal Holloway University and supported by the Hubbard Theory Consortium.
Other funding agencies that supported AWG events thus far include the European Science Fundation (Highly Frustrated Magnetism activity), SEPnet, and ICAM.
