England in Calgary

Before the tournament

On our first full day we went to the
mall for lunch. James was unimpressed.

A Rocky, as visible from the high street
in Banff

Another Rocky (This one is having snow
blown off it!)

A mountain, some trees and a river. OK.
I get the point -- enough of the pastoral already...

I think the cars spoil this one slightly!

Day 1

The serious photo
England and the Philippines

The "comedy" photo
Lewis, Andrew and Alex entered into the spirit.
Sam didn't.

The Hockey Game

Downtown Calgary
The sun and some buildings

A yellow bus
They had NO suspension.

The Pengrowth Saddle Dome
Home of the Calgary Flames!
Hockey at the 1988 Winter Olympics
was hosted here.

Calgary's most famous event: Stampede.
It's a romping, rangeland rumpus. Apparently.

Yes, I have the mind of a 12 year old.
(To be fair everyone else found
it funny. Honestly.)

If only we had been there on 7th March.
(Look carefully.)

I went to a fight last night...

Lewis and Alex find
inner peace at the game.

Day 2

England, Hong Kong and their mascots:
a rabbit and a pink whale.

Not even Alex's WSDC 3 in 3 jacket
can keep him happy.

On your marks, get set, go...

Our guide (left) needed a volunteer.
Since Lewis knew the difference between a
skeleton and a luge he got chosen.

Pop quiz: Skeleton or Luge?

Go on then, which is it Lewis?
(I can't remember.)

Then Lewis was summoned to
demonstrate the bob...

...along with Amy
from Wales in the number four spot.

The World's most famous bob...

The top of the 90m ski jump.
(It probably looks better
photographed in the day.)

Somewhere out there are
Andrew and Sam skiing.

Apparently they lit the torch
especially for us!

Since I'm such a good sport (ha ha)
I feel obliged to include this one.

Sometimes red eye enhances photos.

Siksika Nation

Another photo taken directly into
the sun. (It works every time.)

The grand entrance
The start of the pow-pow

England's entrance

Almost everyone took part in
the friendship dance. I felt
I was better served photographing it.

The bass section

I know that feeling...

Avital and Hayah
Those ballroom dancing classes paid off.

How it should be done.

I point out to James that
he needs to take the cap off FIRST.

Many of the dances involved volunteers.

Andrew, Rose (from Scotland), Sam
and the most forced smile in history

National Geographic

Day 4

Hayah and I during the prep time
before round 8

Given that the event wasn't open to the public
I'm not quite sure why we qualified for
this advertising but who cares?

Anyone who's been to WSDC knows how
Tim feels.

Break night party

Break Night: Line Dancing

Andrew and Rose mishear and
lead a demonstration of break dancing...

Once again I nominate myself
official photographer

Avital enjoying herself...

...just like Diana

Octo-finals

I know that some of you doubt the team
acquired groupies. Here's the proof.

Proof that people on the left are happier.
(Before any of you e-mail me:
left from their perspective.)

After the octo. Andrew begins to show the
merest hint of being happy.

Fundraising Auction

The team in 'national dress'

Pat, Trevor, Diana and Irene
Trevor was arrested about 10 minutes later.

Zanep and Andrew (Kuwait)

Hoop dancing

Back to National Geographic mode

Semi-finals

Before the semi-final

During the semi-final

Being serious after the semi-final
Getting feedback from Martin Pollard

Being less serious
Andrew almost manages a smile

Finals

Sam in the final
He even does a koala impression
to add to the joke.

Andrew
(Maybe I didn't have my camera
on the right setting...)

Lewis
His 20th, and last, main speech at WSDC.

While waiting for the result...

Awards Ceremony

Me
(I think I've gone off that shirt/tie
combination...)

The typical melee around the Irish table

Avital modelling a toothpick in her hair.

Learning to climb our own personal Everests

The singing politican
The expression on Norman's face (far left)
is priceless.

Lewis being presented with his individual prize

Sam with his

By the time of the runners-up award
the team had developed an aura...

...It wasn't because my camera was on
the wrong setting. Honestly.

Still no smile from Andrew.

No! wait! Andrew can smile!

Very mature, Lewis.
