Köln Group

Activities

The group in Köln  is headed by D.Khomskii;  there will be one postdoctoral student for one year within COMePhs program.   We are working with two theoreticians in our our institute who will also partially contribute to this activity.  We also anticipate there will be some collaboration with the experimentalists in Köln.

We shall focus on the following problems:

1)     Role of different degrees of freedom (charge, spin, orbital) in formation of different superstructures in systems with strongly correlated electrons.

2)     Specific features of superstructures in geometrically frustrated systems (triangular lattices like LiNoO2, LiVO2. NaCoO2); spinels; pyrochlores. Specific features of phase separation in frustrated systems; if phase separation turns out to be present.

3)     Role of spin-state transitions in formation of superstructures and of inhomogeneous states, in particular in cobaltites.

4)     4.Interplay of magnetism and ferroelectricity in multiferroic systems; conditions of the existence of homogeneous vs inhomogeneous states.

We will use different theoretical approaches to the problems, specifically:

  • phenomenological description (Landau theory);
  • model treatment using relevant microscopic models;
  • ab-initio band-structure calculations using predominantly LDA+U method (may be also LDA+DMFT).

Our other aim is to respond to requests from the other participants of COMePhS, who would need theoretical help.  So if you do come across something that you do not understand or looks interesting then please contact us ().  If we could be of any help , we will do our best.
