Postgraduate Admissions to TCMThe TCM group usually accepts a little over half a dozen PhD students each year. They come from a variety of places: Cambridge, other UK institutions, Europe and the rest of the world. Their funding arrangements are also varied, some being self-funded, most being funded from grants available to the Group. There is no rigid list of projects available. A PhD typically takes three to four years, and those academic staff who are likely to be in post in four years' time are typically qualified to supervise. Each will typically take between zero and three students a year, depending on how many students he has already, funding, quality of applicants, etc. Research areas include Electronic Structure Computation, Soft Condensed Matter, Statistical Physics, Strongly Correlated Electronic Materials and Biophysics. Two posters containing areas of current interest and potential PhD projects are available (click on the thumbnails below for a pdf):
Staff who are potentially interested in applicants for 2013 are: Drs Ahnert, Castelnovo, Hine, Lamacraft and Morris, and Profs Cooper, Needs, Payne, Simons and Warner. The Group will hold an Open Day for 2013 applicants on the afternoon Wednesday 30th January starting at 14:15, and will interview on Fridays 8th and 22nd February. Attendance at the Open Day is useful, but by no means essential. Applications are ideally received by the end of January. Details on the application process can be found at http://www.phy.cam.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/ If you are travelling from a distance and wish to speak with a prospective supervisor on the morning of the Open Day, or have any other enquiries about a PhD in TCM, please contact the TCM Administrator, Mr David Taylor, email: admin @ tcm.phy.cam.ac.uk |
